Jennifer Black - Tonight we will talk about cartilage tears in the shoulder. Dr. Steve I have heard of cartilage tears in the knee but can it happen in the shoulder.
Dr. Steve - Yes, cartilage tears in the shoulder can be more painful then in the knee.
In the knee we call them cartilage tears in the shoulder we refer to them as labral tears. The labrum acts as a block, like what is used on a fire truck to keep it from rolling down a hill.
In the knee we call them cartilage tears, in the shoulder we refer to them as labral tears. The labrum acts as a block, like what is used on a fire truck to keep it from rolling down a hill.
In the body the labrum is mobile and can deform. If it is deformed to far it tears. This creates a painful, clicking, in the shoulder. MRI is often necessary to get a definitive diagnosis.
If you have a tear you have options for treatment. If little disability Physical therapy, it a lot of disability surgical repair first then physical therapy.
So if you clicking and pain in your shoulder you may have a labral tear. Get evaluated by a physical therapist.
