Voice- The Bodyshop with Jennifer Black and Dr. Steve is brought to you by Allegheny Chesapeake Physical Therapy.

Jennifer Black - Tonight our topic is how to check your skin for cancer. Can we really do this ourselves Dr. Steve?

Dr. Steve - Yes, most definitely, if you can follow ABCDE you can do this. Skin cancer is on the rise and if you catch it early it is almost 100% treatable.

When I see patients they are frequently in a gown so I get to see their trunk and I always look at their skin regardless of why I am seeing them.

So I want every one to do what I do when I see a mole. First think if ABCDE if any of these things are seen you need to see a dermatologist or your primary care physician.

A.     Asymmetry if a mole when divided in half doesn't look the same on both sides it is asymmetrical

B.     Border, the edge of the mole is blurry, or jagged

C.     Color, changes to the color of the mole, darkening, spreading of the color, loss of color, multiple colors, blue, red, purple, white or gray.

D.     Diameter, anything larger then a pencil eraser

E.     Elevation, a mole that is raised above the skin and has a rough texture or surface.

If you notice any of these items you should be checked by a dermatologist or your primary care physician. Don't wait if detected early it is usually 100% treatable. If you can't remember them they are posted on our website.
