Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a physician’s referral for Physical Therapy?

No. Pennsylvania is a direct access state which means you may seek physical therapy services without a physician referral.

However, some insurance companies require a physician referral before services will be authorized. Do not hesitate to consult a physical therapist regarding your condition first. They can direct you to a specialist.

Do I have a choice where to attend therapy?

Yes. As a patient, you have the right to receive therapy services from the provider of your choice.

Will my insurance cover therapy services?

When you call to schedule your initial appointment a medical secretary will conduct a short interview. At that point, ACPT will determine if your insurance accepts ACPT as a provider.

As a courtesy to you, ACPT will verify your insurance benefits and coverage. Your insurance benefits will designate your financial responsibilities in the form of co-payments, co-insurance, and/or deductibles.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Contact ACPT at 1-800-NEW-SELF or find a location near you.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

When you schedule an appointment we have reserved that time especially for you. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, be courteous and give us at least 24 hours notice so that another patient may be treated at that time.

What can I expect on my first visit?

You will be asked to arrive for your appointment about 15 minutes early to complete paperwork. Click here to review and download forms.

Your therapist will perform a comprehensive evaluation consisting of a detailed history of your condition and physical examination.

When your evaluation is complete, your therapist will develop a unique treatment plan that is customized for you and your condition. You and your therapist will develop goals to accomplish during your episode of therapy.

What should I bring to my first visit?

For your first visit, you should bring your insurance cards, physician referral (if you have one), paperwork (if you downloaded it), a list of your current medications and drug allergies. Any operative, MRI, or x-ray reports you have are also helpful in your care.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing which allows you to move freely. Patient gowns and shorts are available in the office if required. Our facilities offer private treatment rooms, where you may change your clothes.

How long will my visits last?

Your initial visit may last up to ninety minutes. Subsequent treatment sessions typically last in duration anywhere from 45 minutes to 75 minutes depending on your diagnosis.

How many therapy sessions will I attend?

The amount and frequency of visits will be set by your therapist with your cooperation.

What services do you provide?

Will my therapist communicate with my physician?

Your therapist will send your physician their assessment from your evaluation, treatment plans, goals, and prognosis. On a monthly basis, your therapist will re-assess your condition and update your physician.

If there are any concerns or complications, your therapist will notify your physician immediately by phone or in person. If you present to therapy without a physician referral, ACPT notifies your physician that you are seeking therapy services.

What happens when I complete my episode of therapy?

Your therapist will assign you a Home Exercise Program with instructions to maintain your condition or prevent your condition from returning. Your therapist will encourage you to schedule a one month follow up appointment. At that time, they will assess your progress.

Don’t be surprised to hear from your therapist now and again!
